What is WhatsApp - Is it doing what it is suppose to be doing?

WhatsApp a supposed cross platform group chat operating on via the internet needs to verify your mobile number before activation.

So is this just a ploy to get your number? WhatsApp is supposed to allow me to receive SMS without the phone.

Is Skype, Google+,  Gmail,  Outlook,  MSN, Chaton,  ChatChat etc do just the same.

Verdict:  Keep your smartphone trim. I am leaving WhatsApp out.

Apple's iPad and iPhone Users Test Apple's Maps And Walk Away Frustered

Apple attempt to wean users away from Android by creating a Apple's Maps and plunking it into iOS 6 leaves many users frustered.

Lacking features like public transit directions, comprehensive traffic data or street view pictures that makes Google Maps so popular, the Apple Maps app is  facing negativism from users worldwide for geographical errors, missing information etc.

Which leads me to think if consumers are making a good choice when they buy a product that is so dependent on a single source for eveything that make it work.

Think the Intel PC, the generic smartphone.  Divorcing the hardware from the software has its advantages.

The Intel based computers has brands like Dell, Toshiba, IBM and almost every one else. Same for the smartphones with Samsung now taking the lead.  Microsoft is just too happy making the Windows OS better everyday,  just a Google open sourcing the Android  OS.

Smartphones put writing on the wall for paid texts? I dont think so.

Quote: "SMS in the next few years will contribute less and less to non-voice revenue for operators," said Neha Dharia, a consumer telecoms analyst at Ovum.
Unquote.

So is this going to happen?

Yes if everyone just use their smartphone on wifi.

No if people still uses 3G or LTE for their smartphones where all these so call smart apps for text voice and IM needs to operate on. The telcos will be more than happy getting revenue from these 3G or LTE data connections.

Sothebys Auctioned First Apple Computer

On June 16 Sothebys auctioned in New York off a rare surviving first model of the Apple computer - a stripped down, clunky device for US$374,000 (S$479,000).

This exhibit is said to be one of the less than 50 first Apple computer surviving and is still working. Not to mentioned that this is the Apple computer that will never be infected with any virus for it has no internet connection, the OS is unique, and people just to busy writing virus software and malware for the Windows OS.

What I Think Of the Samsung Apple Dispute

"The Mannheim Regional Court in Germany on Friday rejected a patent infringement suit filed by Samsung against its US rival over its third generation wireless technology, while also dismissing Apple's claim that Samsung infringed on the firm's slide-to-unlock technology."

From what I see, Samsung is like telling Apple they cannot use the radio to talk and Apple is telling Samsung that they cannot have a door with a turning handle.

The thing is you have not that many ways of doing certain things on a smartphone with a touch interface. Samsung and Apple could well have save some shareholders money by disengaging from such squabbles.

Blackberry's extremely critical network failure stranded users.

Millions of Blackberry users worldwide has been left with no email and internet access. Blackberry blamed the outage on "extremely critical" network failure.

The things is why do people still use the Blackberry? When you have the iPhone, the Samung Galaxy Android phone and a host of other smartphones. All these smartphones used the worldwide public internet and G3 networks to provide voice and internet access.

Can Blackberry have the resources that the large billion dollars telcos has to provide the safe secure and reliable connections that smartphones users needs?

Getting Rid Of A URL Redirect Fast

A URL redirect virus was redirecting the www.facebook.com to a site that says I have been selected to win a iPad. Only thing I have to do is pay 3 dollars to have the quiz sms to me.

It looks real in the begining, but attempts to dismiss the site by typing www.facebook.com directly on the browser address bar bring back the malicious site that tries to rip me off via paid sms. This make me suspect that some malware has slip into my Windows 7 installation.

I could then start to scan the system with some antivirus software, but things like this takes ages to complete especially when you have a 20GB software installation.

My solution is simply to restore a known good version of Windows 7 from a disk backup I made with Acronis True Image Home Edition. It takes about 15 minutes. At the end I got back normal facebook access.

Disk backup has always been my preferred solution to handle virus and malware. Using antivirus software slow the system down, requires frequent signatures update and cost money.
